Funded Projects
I am pleased to announce that the local governments and organizations listed below have been awarded federal funding during the week of June 30 - July 11, 2008. These resources will help Arkansans in meeting the needs of their communities.
Bentonville
Benton and Washington Counties obtained a $604,729 grant from the Federal Highway Administration. The project will assess the feasibility of the Western Beltway alternative and study the potential relief it may provide to other North/South routes.
Jonesboro
Arkansas State University (ASU) obtained investments funds in the amount of $97,850 from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). These funds will support the University Center Program at ASU. The center’s objective is to promote job creation and encourage private investment in Northeast Arkansas.
Little Rock
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences obtained a $188,053 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for a project titled, “Selective CB2 Cannabinoid Agonists as Candidate Therapeutics for ALS.”
Louann
The Louann Volunteer Fire Department obtained a $9,500 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This funding will be used to improve operations and safety for the department. The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Office of Grants and Training.
Sparkman
The City of Sparkman obtained a $7,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Facility Grant Program. These Rural Development funds will be used by the police department to purchase a new police car and additional computer equipment.
Texarkana
The Texarkana, Arkansas Fire Department obtained a $14,942 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This funding will be used to improve operations and safety for the department. The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Office of Grants and Training.

Conway
The University of Central Arkansas obtained a $598,361 grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Directed Grants Program. This funding will support the upgrading of faculty computing, updating of the developmental and GIS laboratories, and other technology advancements across campus.
Crocketts Bluff
The Crocketts Bluff Volunteer Fire Department obtained a $51,015 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This funding will be used to improve operations and safety for the department. The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Office of Grants and Training.
EnolaThe Enola Area Volunteer Fire Department obtained a $53,295 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This funding will be used to improve operations and safety for the department. The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Office of Grants and Training.
Fort Smith
City of Fort Smith obtained two grants totaling $1,294,988 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s HOME Program. The CDBG grant, in the amount of $822,191 will be used to provide decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate-income persons. The HOME grant, in the amount of $472,797 will provide funding for housing programs that meet local needs and priorities of low to very low-income families.
Harrison
North Arkansas College obtained a $205,349 grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Directed Grants Program. This funding will support technology upgrades to support the college’s efforts to fund equipment used to educate nursing and other healthcare majors, along with students in other occupations, transfer, and community education programs.
Hot Springs
The Hot Springs School District #6 obtained a $747,287 grant from the Department of Education’s Safe Schools/ Healthy Students Grants Program. These funds will support school district’s efforts to provide students, schools, and communities the benefit of enhanced comprehensive education mental health, social services, law enforcement, and, as appropriate, juvenile justice system services that can promote healthy children development and prevent violence and alcohol and other drug abuse.
Hot Springs
National Park Community College obtained funding through the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program. The college will use this funding to strengthen its fiscal stability by developing new programs to increase enrollment-related revenues. The projected funding amount is $399,983 for a five-year period. The Strengthening Institutions Program helps eligible colleges and universities strengthen their management and fiscal operations and assists these institutions in planning, developing, or implementing activities that promise to strengthen the academic quality of their institutions.
Little Rock
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences obtained a $514,798 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities. This funding will support UAMS’ “Colorectal Cancer Education and Screening Program.”
Midland
The Midland Fire Department obtained a $13,864 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This funding will be used to improve operations and safety for the department. The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Office of Grants and Training.
Mountain Home
Arkansas State University at Mountain Home obtained funding through the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program. The university will use this funding to create a project titled, “Strengthening Student Access and Success”. This project will create academic support for college-preparatory and gateway course students, high-demand online courses, and on-campus/ online student services. The projected funding amount is $399,722 for a five-year period. The Strengthening Institutions Program helps eligible colleges and universities strengthen their management and fiscal operations and assists these institutions in planning, developing, or implementing activities that promise to strengthen the academic quality of their institutions.
